New CURSOAIE for Members: Music Industry Contracts

The course will be taught by lawyers Javier de Torres and Mercedes Cebrián.

The AIE Artists’ Society is offering a new free CURSOAIE exclusively for its members. Under the title Music Industry Contracts, the course will be taught by lawyers Javier de Torres and Mercedes Cebrián and will take place in a hybrid format, upon prior registration, on Wednesday, March 5, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

As an artist, you have likely encountered various types of contracts that can significantly impact your professional career. At AIE, we believe it is essential for all artists to have a basic understanding of the key types of contracts in today’s music industry, the crucial terms they contain, and, most importantly, their legal implications.

During this three-hour session, attendees will learn about:

  • The importance of contracts in the music industry
  • Basic tips for contract negotiation.
  • Key contract types and negotiation strategies.
  • Artist, licensing, and distribution contracts. Artistic production.  Synchronization.
  • Main contracts related to authors’ rights (publishing).
  • Representation and/or management contracts.

 

Javier de Torres has been a practicing lawyer since the 1990s, with extensive experience in intellectual property law. For years, he was a partner and head of the intellectual property department at Estudio Jurídico Bercovitz-Carvajal. Currently, he advises artists, managers, record labels, publishing companies, collecting societies, and businesses in the audiovisual and tech sectors.

Mercedes Cebrián holds a Law and International Relations degree from Universidad Pontificia de Comillas – ICADE and a Master’s in Intellectual Property from Universidad Carlos III. She has worked at Warner Music Spain as legal counsel, specializing in phonogram production, artist agreements, and synchronization licenses. She also served as Head of Business Affairs & Compliance Officer at Altafonte, managing the legal department for Altafonte Music Publishing / Boa Música Editorial.
